Ottumwa --- A couple of dominating pitching performances by freshman pitcher Kendle Schieber highlighted Indian Hills' season-opening trip to Alabama and Florida. Schieber threw a two-hitter in the Warriors' 5-1 win against Calhoun (AL) CC to kick off the trip, striking out 12 in her first-ever collegiate start. She then hurled a two-hit shutout with five Ks as the Warriors ended their journey with a 9-0 blanking of Lake Michigan CC.
In between, unfortunately, the Warriors failed to record a victory, returning with a 2-11 record, although veteran coach Jim Overturf said he definitely saw some positives in his team's performance, even they though failed to record a victory other than the two bookend contests.
"We certainly saw a lot of improvement from the first weekend to the last," said Overturf, who pointed out that his squad's inability to practice outdoors prior to leaving on the trip worked against them.
The staff ERA was 5.25 for the 13 games and that will get better, Overturf said, once his all-freshman pitching staff gets more experience. "We have to improve our defense beginning with the pitching staff. We usually gave up one big inning every game," he added, noting that the Warriors did have opportunities to add to their win total, but gave up a late lead in four games.
"The effort was there every day," the coach said, "but getting them to relax and play with confidence was a big challenge. I really believe they tried so hard that they were very tense and not able to finish games strong."
Schieber also contributed at the plate, leading the team in average at .344, hits with 11 and RBIs with seven. She had three hits and drove in four runs in the game with Lake Michigan.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Matzen hit .312 while playing in all 13 games and six of her 10 hits were doubles. Soph Felisha Durflinger had a two-homer game in the opener against Calhoun and freshman Cheyenne Ellis also homered in that contest.
Olivia Starcevich, a freshman, led the team in at-bats with 42 and runs scored with seven.
The Warriors will have to find a way to generate more offense. They averaged fewer than three runs per game and had a team batting average of .235.
Indian Hills will head to Missouri this weekend for the Carthage Bash and will play five games in two days. The home and conference opener is slated for March 22 when Iowa Western visits Hellyer Field for a doubleheader.

Trip to Mississippi is Canceled
Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills softball team was slated to open its spring season this weekend in a tournament in Booneville, Mississippi, but with the uncertainty of the weather the trip has been canceled.
The Warriors will now travel to Cullman, Alabama next weekend to begin their season in a tournament hosted by Wallace State CC. IHCC will play three games on Friday, Mar. 1, and two games the next day.
Those five contests are part of a 13-game season-opening swing Indian Hills will take to Alabama and Florida the first nine days of March.

Warrior Softball Excels in Classroom
OTTUMWA --- Last year’s Indian Hills softball team was named an All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The 2012 IHCC squad had the third-best team grade point average, 3.44, among all NFCA member two-year schools in the country.
The Warrior softball team had earlier been named an All-Academic Team by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Indian Hills coach Jim Overturf said, “I am really proud of how the team finished last year, not only on the field where we were 34-28 and just missed winning the regional title, but especially in the classroom. It shows what you can achieve with hard work and determination. This is what we ask of our players every year. It was a great job by each individual on that 2012 team.”
The IHCC softball program is working on a streak of 13 straight years in which the Warriors have been named an All-Academic team by the NJCAA.

Haight Named Assistant Coach at IHCC
Ottumwa -- A former Indian Hills player who was instrumental in the 2010 team's run to the national tournament has been hired as an assistant coach. Brandi Haight, a two-year starter for the Warriors, joins the IHCC staff as an assistant under head coach Jim Overturf.
Haight, who pitched and played outfield for Indian Hills, won three postseason starts for the last IHCC team to qualify for the national tourney in 2010. She defeated Southeastern and Muscatine in the Region 11 tourney, then beat Crowder (Mo.) in the District tournament.
She was also named an Academic All-American after her sophomore campaign.
Coach Overturf is excited to have Haight involved again with Indian Hills softball, saying, "Brandi will be a great addition to our program. She is very energetic and ready to take on the challenges of coaching."
Haight graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Ia. this past spring. She was an outfielder on the Kohawks softball team, appearing in all but two games over two seasons.
"Brandi will be a great help with our pitchers and outfielders," said Overturf. "It will be great to have a quality person like her on my staff."
Haight began her new duties as assistant coach in mid-July. She will also be a building supervisor and intramurals coordinator at IHCC.
Her younger sister, MacKenzie, is a member of the 2012 recruiting class and will be joining the IHCC softball program this fall.

All-Region Honors for Six IHCC Players
OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills Community College had two players on the first team and four more on the second team on the All-Region 11 softball squads.
The first-team choices from IHCC were sophomore catcher Cortney Wood and freshman outfielder Hiliary Pennington. On the second team were two sophomores – pitcher Hannah Washburn and outfielder Jenna Wolfe – and a pair of freshmen – first baseman Kaitlyn Matzen and designated player Paige Blom.
It was the second straight year on the All-Region team for both Wood and Washburn. Both were first-team picks last year.
Wood and Pennington both started all 62 games the Warriors played this spring. Wood led the team in the power numbers with 18 doubles, six homers, 45 RBIs and a .540 slugging percentage.
Pennington had the best batting average at .379 and also paced IHCC in at bats (214), runs (44), hits (81), triples (3) and stolen bases (16).
Washburn posted a 17-12 record with a 2.63 ERA. She struck out 188 batters in 186 innings. The innings pitched and strikeouts were both third-highest in a single season in school history. For her career, Washburn compiled a 32-17 record with a 2.85 ERA. She fanned 310 hitters in 305 IP.
Wolfe had a .291 batting average as a sophomore with 12 doubles, 24 runs and 16 RBIs.
Matzen tied Wood for the team lead with six homers. She knocked in 29 runs and scored 33 with a .261 average.
Blom hit .377 and topped the team with a .438 on-base percentage. She had 60 hits and 30 RBIs.

Warriors Come Up Short in Bid for Region Title
West Burlington, IA -- The Indian Hills Warriors bounced back from a disappointing loss in the opening game of the Region 11 postseason tournament to make a serious bid to capture the region crown. But the bid was denied when Iowa Western came from behind to knock off the Warriors, 5-4, in the title game.
Indian Hills had taken a 4-1 lead in the championship contest, continuing the momentum they had gained in a 7-3 win over IWCC in the previous game. Iowa Western, however, tied the score in the finale with a three-run 5th inning and then pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the 7th to end the Warriors' season.
The pitching of sophomores Ali Martin and Hannah Washburn allowed IHCC to extend its season. The two right-handers shared the pitching duties as the Warriors stormed back to win three straight games, spread over three days.
Faced with the prospect of seeing their season come to a close after Iowa Western nipped them, 3-2, in the first game on Saturday, the Warriors got a combined shutout from Martin and Washburn to blank Southeastern CC, 2-0, later in the day.
Martin started and went 3 2/3 innings before coach Jim Overturf followed his strategy from the second half of the season and brought a fresh arm into the game. That was Washburn, who completed the shutout with 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief. Run-scoring hits by Lindsey Evans in the 1st inning and Sam Norris in the 4th accounted for the IHCC scoring.
On Sunday, Indian Hills and Muscatine CC played into the second inning in a steady rain before the game was suspended. The Warriors had tallied three runs in the 2nd to take a 3-1 lead. When play resumed on Monday morning, Kaitlyn Caston homered to bring the Cardinals to within a run, but Indian Hills got the run back in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single by Paige Blom and neither team scored after that in a 4-2 IHCC victory.
Washburn, the starter in this game, got the first two outs in the 7th before Martin came on with the tying runs on base and got a strikeout to end it.
That gave the Warriors a chance to avenge their earlier loss to Iowa Western and they didn't miss out on the opportunity. Indian Hills teed off on Iowa Western pitchers Greta Smeins and Kylee Polsley in a 13-hit attack in a 7-3 victory.
The Warriors had a half-dozen extra-base hits, including homers by Kaitlyn Matzen and Megan Bix. Those two, along with Hiliary Pennington, Cortney Wood and Evans, each had two hits.
Martin started for Indian Hills and pitched into the 7th. Washburn came on with two runners on and got a strikeout and a groundout to finish the win.
That set up a winner-take-all game between the teams.
The Warriors again drove Smeins, Iowa Western's all-region pitcher, out of the game with nine hits and four runs in the first four innings. Wood homered in the 1st to open the scoring and the Warriors tacked on three runs in the 4th, two coming on a single by Carrie Hudson.
Iowa Western scored three times in the 5th against IHCC's Washburn to tie the score at 4-all and the Reivers' Taylor Jonas singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 7th.
Polsley completely shut down the Warriors' offense after their torrid start, allowing only one baserunner in 3 2/3 innings pitched.
The Warriors ended the season with a 34-28 record. And five sophomores -- Washburn, Martin, Evans, Wood and Jenna Wolfe -- saw their IHCC careers come to a close as Indian Hills fell just short in its bid for the region championship.

Warriors Post Road Sweep
Marshalltown, Ia. -- Indian Hills scored early in both games and the Warriors' pitching made those tallies stand up as IHCC swept a doubleheader at Marshalltown CC on Tuesday, winning 2-0 and 3-1.
Hannah Washburn and Ali Martin teamed up for the first game shutout, spacing eight hits very effectively. Washburn went the first five innings and Martin left the tying runs on base in the 7th to end it. She retired three straight hitters after MCC got consecutive singles to start the inning.
Carrie Hudson slugged a first-inning home run to give the Warriors the only run they would need. Courtney Wood doubled home a run in the 2nd. Lindsey Evans had three hits and Hudson two for IHCC.
Martin saved the second game as well, again stranding the potential tying runs on base in the bottom of the 7th. She came on after starter Grace Cleair gave the Warriors 6 2/3 strong innings, allowing only a sixth-inning solo homer.
Indian Hills scored two unearned runs in the top of the 1st in the nightcap and added a run in the 6th. Wood and Megan Bix each had two-hit games and Wood and Evans had RBIs.
The sweep came on the heels of Monday's pair of wins at Muscatine and leaves IHCC with a season record of 26-23.
They are right back in action on Wednesday, hosting Iowa Western in a league doubleheader starting at 2:00 at Hellyer Field.
