Ottumwa -- Indian Hills ended DMACC's season-opening 14-game winning streak, but couldn't make it back-to-back wins against the Bears in softball action at Hellyer Field on Tuesday.
Behind the shutout pitching of Kendle Schieber, the Warriors handed DMACC a 5-0 loss in the opener. But IHCC failed to hold an early 4-0 lead in the nightcap and the Bears recovered to win 5-4.
Schieber helped herself with a two-run single to open the scoring in game one. Carrie Hudson later added a two-run homer for an even bigger cushion.
Kaitlyn Matzen then got the Warriors off to a good start in the next game with a three-run home run in a four-run 3rd inning. The Bears, however, battled back against three IHCC pitchers. An unearned run against reliever Megan Brady was the game-winner in the 7th.
Felisha Durflinger joined Schieber with two hits in the first game and Durflinger and Cheyenne Ellis had two-hit games in game two.
Indian Hills takes part in a tournament hosted by Central CC in Columbus, Nebraska this weekend.

Indian Hills Finishes 2-2 in Home Classic
Ottumwa -- Playing at home for the first time this season, Indian Hills split four games in the Reed Overhead Doors Classic at Hellyer Field on Friday and Saturday.
IHCC opened with 9-2 win against Central (Neb.) CC, then lost to Crowder (Mo.) 6-3. Saturday saw the Warriors drop a 9-6 decision to Jefferson (Mo.) before ending the tourney with a 7-2 triumph over Ellsworth CC.
Mackenzie Haight went the first five innings in the win against Central and the Warriors supported her with a 15-hit attack that included two homers from Kaitlyn Matzen and one each by Felisha Durflinger and Kendle Schieber. Six Warriors had multi-hit games and Matzen and Schieber each drove in three runs.
Schieber was the losing pitcher in the Crowder game, going the distance and striking out seven.
Indian Hills took a 3-1 lead into the 5th inning, but saw it disappear when Crowder scored four times in the 5th and scored another run in the 6th. IHCC was held to four hits, one of them a three-run home run by Durflinger.
Three Indian Hills errors led to four unearned runs in the game with Jefferson. IHCC tried to rally with four runs in the 6th, but came up short.
Durflinger and Schieber had two hits and Durflinger had three RBIs. Hiliary Pennigton had two RBIs and two runs scored.

IHCC Takes Two from North Central
Trenton, Mo. -- Felisha Durflinger homered in each game and the Indian Hills Warriors got good pitching performances in sweeping a doubleheader from North Central (Mo.) on Tuesday by scores of 6-1 and 10-2.
Durflinger had identical numbers at the plate in each game -- two hits, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. That was enough support all by itself for IHCC pitchers Kendle Schieber and Mackenzie Haight.
Schieber scattered eight hits and struck out nine in the opener; Haight allowed only three hits and fanned three in game two as the Warriors picked up their 4th and 5th wins of the season.
"We had solid pitching and aggressive at-bats all day long," said IHCC coach Jim Overturf. "It was definitely our best, most complete day that we've had so far this spring."
Durflinger had a two-run homer and a two-run double in the first game and she, along with Laci Moore and Olivia Starcevich, scored twice.

Warriors Go 1-2 in Rain-Shortened Tourney in Missouri
Joplin, Missouri -- Indian Hills played three of the five games they were slated to play at the Carthage Bash before Sunday rains ended the tournament prematurely.
The Warriors lost to Northern Oklahoma - Tonkawa 9-1, defeated Maple Woods 4-1 and dropped a 2-0 decision to Three Rivers on Saturday.
Mackenzie Haight picked up her first win for the Warriors in the victory against Maple Woods, tossing a complete-game six-hitter. She walked two and struck out two.
IHCC got all four runs in the 1st with Kaylyn Decock driving in two of them. Kendle Schieber had two of the Warriors' eight hits.

Spring Trip Recap
Ottumwa --- A couple of dominating pitching performances by freshman pitcher Kendle Schieber highlighted Indian Hills' season-opening trip to Alabama and Florida. Schieber threw a two-hitter in the Warriors' 5-1 win against Calhoun (AL) CC to kick off the trip, striking out 12 in her first-ever collegiate start. She then hurled a two-hit shutout with five Ks as the Warriors ended their journey with a 9-0 blanking of Lake Michigan CC.
In between, unfortunately, the Warriors failed to record a victory, returning with a 2-11 record, although veteran coach Jim Overturf said he definitely saw some positives in his team's performance, even they though failed to record a victory other than the two bookend contests.
"We certainly saw a lot of improvement from the first weekend to the last," said Overturf, who pointed out that his squad's inability to practice outdoors prior to leaving on the trip worked against them.
The staff ERA was 5.25 for the 13 games and that will get better, Overturf said, once his all-freshman pitching staff gets more experience. "We have to improve our defense beginning with the pitching staff. We usually gave up one big inning every game," he added, noting that the Warriors did have opportunities to add to their win total, but gave up a late lead in four games.
"The effort was there every day," the coach said, "but getting them to relax and play with confidence was a big challenge. I really believe they tried so hard that they were very tense and not able to finish games strong."
Schieber also contributed at the plate, leading the team in average at .344, hits with 11 and RBIs with seven. She had three hits and drove in four runs in the game with Lake Michigan.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Matzen hit .312 while playing in all 13 games and six of her 10 hits were doubles. Soph Felisha Durflinger had a two-homer game in the opener against Calhoun and freshman Cheyenne Ellis also homered in that contest.
Olivia Starcevich, a freshman, led the team in at-bats with 42 and runs scored with seven.
The Warriors will have to find a way to generate more offense. They averaged fewer than three runs per game and had a team batting average of .235.

Trip to Mississippi is Canceled
Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills softball team was slated to open its spring season this weekend in a tournament in Booneville, Mississippi, but with the uncertainty of the weather the trip has been canceled.
The Warriors will now travel to Cullman, Alabama next weekend to begin their season in a tournament hosted by Wallace State CC. IHCC will play three games on Friday, Mar. 1, and two games the next day.
Those five contests are part of a 13-game season-opening swing Indian Hills will take to Alabama and Florida the first nine days of March.

Warrior Softball Excels in Classroom
OTTUMWA --- Last year’s Indian Hills softball team was named an All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The 2012 IHCC squad had the third-best team grade point average, 3.44, among all NFCA member two-year schools in the country.
The Warrior softball team had earlier been named an All-Academic Team by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Indian Hills coach Jim Overturf said, “I am really proud of how the team finished last year, not only on the field where we were 34-28 and just missed winning the regional title, but especially in the classroom. It shows what you can achieve with hard work and determination. This is what we ask of our players every year. It was a great job by each individual on that 2012 team.”
The IHCC softball program is working on a streak of 13 straight years in which the Warriors have been named an All-Academic team by the NJCAA.
